About

RAINBOW CLUB, MILAN – AN ICONIC UNDERGROUND CLUB. This Sony HF 60 cassette tape was a gift from a friend in the late 1990s. It contains a live mixtape by DJ Niky featuring Techno, Gabber and Hardcore. But this tape brings back memories of a much bigger story: the legendary Rainbow Club in Milan. Its history goes back to the 1970s, when the venue at Via Forze Armate, on the corner of Via Besenzanica, was known as Rosamunda, a traditional dance hall. On January 20, 1979, it reopened as Odissea 2001, owned by Claudio Conversi, with DJs Paolo Scarpellini and Roy Zinsenheim among its leading figures. Inspired by Stanley Kubrick's science-fiction masterpiece, it soon became a meeting point for Milan's young music lovers. During the late 1970s and 1980s, Punk, New Wave, Post-Punk and Dark music transformed the European scene. New sounds from the UK and the international underground reached Italy, making Milan a major centre of alternative musical culture. Odissea 2001 hosted an extraordinary lineup, including The Police, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Bauhaus, Killing Joke, Echo & the Bunnymen, The Cult, Dead Can Dance, Spandau Ballet, Plasmatics, The Slits, The Damned, Black Flag, Sonic Youth, Gang of Four, Richard Hell and the Voidoids, Nico, Bo Diddley, Peter Hammill, The Sex Gang Children, James White and the Blacks, Dr. Feelgood, The Fleshtones and Steppenwolf, among others. These performances established the venue as one of Milan's most important destinations for alternative music. During the 1980s, it changed its name to Prego and later became associated with the Zimba experience, continuing to host concerts and underground events. In 1993, a new chapter began with the birth of Rainbow Club. It wasn't a glamorous nightclub or somewhere
